DO YOU KNOW THE PARTS OF YOUR BRAKES?

Because your brakes play a critical role in vehicle safety, it's important to understand how each component of the braking system works together. When you press the brake pedal, the brake pads create friction against the rotors to slow your vehicle, while the brake rotors disperse heat to help prevent overheating and maintain consistent braking performance. Both brake pads and rotors are essential to proper brake operation and can wear at different rates, which is why regular brake inspections are recommended to determine when service or replacement is needed.

Brakes FAQ

ANSWER:
At Weston Nissan, we want drivers to know that brake pads are designed with built-in wear indicators that emit a squealing sound when the pads are nearing the end of their service life. This noise can occur whether or not the brake pedal is applied. If you hear this sound, it’s a clear sign your brake pads should be replaced as soon as possible.

Wear indicators are engineered to make noise when approximately 2 mm of brake pad friction material remains. During a visual inspection, Weston Nissan technicians recommend replacing brake pads once they reach — or before — this 2 mm threshold to help maintain safe braking performance and prevent further damage.

ANSWER:
At Weston Nissan, brake rotors are inspected based on the manufacturer’s specified minimum thickness, which is cast directly onto the rotor. This minimum is typically 2–3 mm thinner than the rotor’s original, new thickness.

Rotors should be replaced before they reach this minimum thickness and should never be resurfaced or “turned” below that limit. Exceeding this wear point can compromise braking performance and safety, which is why Weston Nissan technicians follow these guidelines closely during every brake inspection.

ANSWER:
Because every Nissan vehicle is unique, Weston Nissan recommends scheduling a service appointment to have your brakes thoroughly inspected by one of our factory-trained technicians. A professional inspection ensures your braking system is evaluated accurately and maintained to Nissan standards for safety and performance.

ANSWER:
At Weston Nissan, brake-pedal pulsation and symptoms such as steering-wheel vibration during braking are most commonly caused by brake rotor thickness variation, not by a “warped” rotor. As a thicker section of the rotor passes through the brake caliper, it momentarily pushes brake fluid back through the system. This pressure change can be felt in the brake pedal, which then relaxes as the thicker area moves out of the caliper.

This repeating cycle creates brake-pedal pulsation and what’s known as brake torque variation, which may also cause shaking in the steering wheel or seats. While brake discs do not typically warp, excessive heat or improper wheel installation and torqueing can contribute to rotor distortion over time, leading to thickness variation.

Correcting brake-pedal pulsation involves resurfacing (when within specifications) or replacing the brake rotors to restore uniform thickness. Weston Nissan technicians follow Nissan factory guidelines to ensure smooth braking performance and long-term reliability.
