Nissan Goes Green for 2016

Though Nissan has already covered the electric vehicle market with the Nissan Leaf EV, the automaker is looking to tap into the plug-in hybrid market. And they're looking to do it by 2016. As part of their "Nissan Green Program 2016", Nissan plans to reduce the company's carbon footprint, as well as continue their shift to renewable energy - with the plug-in Nissan Versa.

According to Nissan President, Carlos Ghosn, "Nissan wants to be part of the solution toward a sustainable society - for the sake of the planet and as a significant competitive advantage and a strategic differentiator in the global manufacturing sector."1 Ghosn's belief is that consumers are looking for vehicles which "reflect their environmental values."

Future models from the Japanese auto maker are part of this strategy, which includes the improvement of corporate fuel economy by 35%, compared with 2005 levels that are much lower. Over the course of the next 5 years Nissan will design and launch vehicles upgraded with class-leading fuel economy across their range of vehicles in the US, Europe, China and Japan.
